Smoky Mountains Travelogue #3
A continuation of the series, drawn straight to ink in my sketchbook. Read part 1 here, and part 2 here. I feel like I’m getting worse at drawing and better at writing, and both of those trends are good for me. I had hoped to finish these this week because May is going to be busy, but life & other projects pulled my attention and time. I’ll keep working on these as I can.

Work update: for the time being, I’ve put the book I was working on aside. I plan to return to it when my kids are a little older and schedules are more streamlined, but the reality of being the flexible-schedule-parent is that every illness, school closure, holiday, doctor appointment, and logistical headache is mine to manage. This book needs more hours of uninterrupted time than my life currently has. Admitting that to myself has been more of a relief than a shame, which is good information to hold in my heart.
I’m finding a lot of joy and engagement in working on smaller projects. In addition to these diary comics, I’m doing course development for a class I might teach in the fall (details tk) and thinking & reading a lot towards that; I’m working on a short comic that I hope to send around for publication online; Ask Ask and other freelance projects bubble up; and I’m writing every day and finding my footing and voice in this new way of working. It feels really good.
Happy final few days of April, my friends. The last frost is almost here!
This Substack will always be free, but if the spirit moves you and you want to treat me to a coffee while I draw: https://ko-fi.com/marniegalloway
