Last month, in a bid to create a budget for holiday gifting in a financially tight year, I opened personal commissions for the first time in a while. I asked to draw 5”x7” ink drawings of homes and places of significance, and folks came through! An architect-grandparent’s house that he designed himself that had to be sold when the grandparents passed; a Thai restaurant that was the site of a recently married couple’s first date; first homes; homes that became islands of safety and joy in the pandemic; etc etc. I created a slightly surreal vernacular for some of these, surrounding many of them with flowers or plants that have personal meaning. These house portraits were such a joy to draw, and intimate to spend time in such important places. I asked for permission to share these, because I think they turned out really lovely:
A few folks asked for other subject matters; the family and pet portraits feel too personal to share here, but one personal commission is basically a home portrait…if you’re a member of Starfleet. Engage!
This week is my last class of my first semester teaching at SAIC, and next week is the last week of uninterrupted time to work before winter break begins for my kids. I hope to share a last post of 2023 next week, but if deadlines & holiday labors get the best of me: happy new year, friends! Wishing you all peace and good health in the coming year.
