After years of throwing work-spaghetti at the wall and having nothing stick, I suddenly have a collection of projects and opportunities on my desk that I’m really proud of and excited about. The hitch for this newsletter is, none of them are able to be shared yet! No contracts have been signed, no pitch officially accepted, no onboarding has begun, but everything is developed to the point where I don’t think anything will fall through. It feels really good to be going down to the basement every day and knowing exactly what needs doing.
So, instead of sharing what’s on my desk, here’s what’s on my kids’ desks:
Last Thursday my 7 year old stayed home for “dizziness” that turned out to be a desperate need for a mental health day. One of the things we did on that beautiful day together was their idea: documenting all the bugs we could find in the garden. The woodlouse spider (“doodle bug eating spider”) and the zebra jumping spiders were my favorite!
My 4 year old’s drawing ability is finally sophisticated enough to capture the absolutely surrealist buck-wild things she thinks up and says to make us all laugh. She pulled this out of her backpack the other day. When I asked what it was, she said it’s a black widow spider on the leaning tower of Pisa, and she’s crouched naked behind a hill under a rainbow looking at the spider who she LOVES. Obviously.
For teacher appreciation week, she drew this unicorn for the classroom aide. “It’s a unicorn with knots in its hair, just like me!”
I draw on our wall calendar so my pre-literate kids can see what’s upcoming. My 7 year old got to the entry for their D&D game before I could! Roll 20 to attack the basilisk, minus 100 hp!
And, finally, a drawing from my 4 year old of me working on my book. “All those grey dots are dust!” Consider me roasted to a crisp. Ha!
Back to my dusty labors. Hope y’all are well!
These are so delightful, and I can’t wait to hear what you’ve got cookin!
