Minicomic Pre-Orders, Festival Season 2024, Cicadas, & CAKE Art Auction
PREORDERS NOW OPEN!
Physical copies of On Fire, a short comic about parental fear, gun violence, Joan of Arc, and community chickens (originally published by Mutha Magazine) are now available for pre-order. 7” x 7” square, full color, 12 pages, $10.
I also put together a small (A6) but mighty (48 page) minicomic called Pensacola, also available for pre-order, collecting the diary comics I made in 2022 on a solo birthday trip to the only vacation destination cheap enough where we could cover the whole thing with credit card points. These were my first diary comics, and it was so much fun I never really stopped. I included some spreads below. 4.1” x 5.8”, color cover and B&W interior, 48 pages, $8.
While we’re talking pre-orders, don’t forget to pre-order your copy of Abortion Pills Zine from Silver Sprocket!
Festival Season 2024
I’m returning to comics festivals this year for the first time in five years: I’m softer and more grey-haired than the last time I tabled, but just as excited to see everyone’s faces!
Zine Not Dead Fest: Saturday June 15, Grace Church of Logan Square (3325 W Wrightwood Ave), noon to 6pm.
I applied to CAKE (Chicago Alternative Comics Expo), August 24-25 at the Zhou B. Arts Center at 1029 W 35th St.; I hope to table there as well, but announcements have not been made yet. Whether or not I get a table, I’ll be there walking around saying hi!
Small Press Expo, one day only, Saturday September 14! I was short sighted and didn’t apply for a table at SPX, but I’ll be hopping behind the Radiator Comics table for some of the day and maybe also the Silver Sprocket table, attending on Saturday to celebrate the launch of the Abortion Pills Zine with Izzy and Sage!
Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC): September 28-29, Columbus Ohio
Chicago Zine Fest: Saturday October 5, 11 am-6 pm at the Columbia College Student Center (754 S Wabash Ave).
Cicada Parade-A
To celebrate the emergence of the 17-year periodical cicadas in this historic year when the 13 year southern brood also emerges, the Insect Asylum, Chicago’s great insect-loving curio shop and museum, is hosting the Cicada Parade-A, a city-wide public art installation of large plaster cicadas decorated by local artists. I adopted a cicada, decorated it with metallic paints and chrome, and installed it on a tree at our beloved neighborhood park, Brands. At the end of summer, the cicada will be donated to the Insect Asylum and auctioned off to support the truly special and beloved community space they have nurtured in their shop. A million thanks to Teresa and the rest of the Brands Park staff for being game to host our cicada, and to my kids for helping me install!
CAKE Art Auction Returns
This Saturday, May 25, CAKE’s beloved fundraiser returns: the CAKE art auction! A good half of the original art on my walls were won in prior CAKE auctions—you can get original art by legends of cartooning at remarkable prices, support your local indie comics festival, and since CAKE is a nonprofit you can write off your bids! Win win win. I’m truly heartbroken to miss this year’s auction (we have out of town plans for the long weekend), but I did donate a drawing. This started as the bird saying “I have forgotten how to draw,” and I cheered myself out of a new-project morale slump by adding the other birds and the tree underneath.
Thanks so much for reading!
